Garden Tour: Part Shade, Plant-FIlled Backyard Garden in Portland, OR

The content I provide on eGardenGo is informed by the many client gardens I've designed and collaborated on over the years. It's also based on my own garden—my living laboratory, where I explore and experiment with lots of different plants, combining them in artful and practical ways I hope you'll find as interesting and exciting as I do. In the video above, I do a walkthrough of my back garden and discuss the way I use it to try out a lot of different combinations.

PLANT COMBO IDEAS—INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE

I walk most every day, so I see a lot of gardens each week. I enjoy seeing some of the same gardens over and over. This allows me to vicariously garden by watching the process and progress of the plants through the seasons and over the years.

Much of what I learn that way is incorporated into the planting schemes I publish on eGardenGo. Below are a couple of recent examples that were inspired by neighborhood gardens.

Meadow-Like Perennials Flanked by Evergreens

Meadow-Like Perennials Flanked by Evergreens

This meadow-inspired parking strip planting was wonderful. Its overall disposition is loose, casual, and romantic! The flowers provide a feast for the eyes and the pollinators. Not evident in the photo above, it is anchored by tough evergreens—Arctostaphylos 'Sunset' and olive trees flank it on both sides.

Simple and Sophisticated Planting Scheme for Front Entry Garden

Simple and Sophisticated Planting Scheme for Front Entry Garden

Quite a departure from the scheme above, but equally instructive and inspiring. The simple sophistication of this entry garden was at once modern and naturalistic. It is an excellent mix of textures and I really like its interlocking drifts and flowing lines. Flowers and fall color feature as well—the ivory panicles of the oakleaf hydrangea will age to pink. Soon, the crape myrtle will bloom. Both will provide fall color later in the season.

Until next time!
