LET THE GARDEN GAMES BEGIN!

Add Months of Enjoyment to Your Garden with These Early Bloomers

Whew! January was quite the rollercoaster of a month. I was very happy to flip my calendar forward and welcome February.

Even though spring is a bit down the road, for me, February marks the commencement of the gardening season. From here on, everything seems to get easier, brighter, and more hopeful. Each day brings new developments, and the weeks and months ahead promise a cascading, ever-evolving series of exciting garden happenings.

JUMPSTART SPRING WITH EARLY BLOOMERSΒ

I'm a big fan of reveling in the unfolding delights of all the garden's seasons, but I'm especially delighted by the earliest arrivals. In these first days of February 2024, Crocus and Galanthus, for example, are going full speed ahead in my garden. And, oh boy, am I happy to see them!

Click through to the blog post below, and I'll walk you through my process for including early spring bulbs and spring-blooming ephemerals (meaning that they'll bloom and then wither away and disappear by summer) in my gardens.

If you'd like to watch a video (taken last spring) showing how I've done this in my garden, click here.

Tips for Adding Early Bloomers to Your Garden

ALL HAIL THE HELLEBORE

All Hail the Hellebore

Hellebore season is upon us! There are lots of pretty Hellebores that do well in Pacific Northwest gardens.

This slideshow is a sampling of varieties that I've seen in and near Portland, Oregon. Buying hellebores in bloom is the best way to see what you're getting. So, if you need some enticement to visit your local garden center, here you go!

As a final note, here's a reminder: The Northwest Flower and Garden Festival is coming up from February 14 through 18 at the Seattle Convention Center. It's always a nice way to usher in the gardening season. Tickets, lecture schedule, and a full description of events and attractions are available here.
