This client garden gave me a planting site about as tough as they come — dry shade under the high canopy of some huge conifers, with root competition throughout and almost no rain reaching the ground. Dry shade calls for plants that can hold structure without much fuss. Fatsia, Aucuba, and Sarcococca are the three I come back to again and again — evergreen, tolerant of root competition, and reliable enough to build a bed around. If you're working with a difficult spot of your own, these are a good place to start. |
