Hello gardening friends,
It has been a busy couple of months for me, and I admit I've been a bit remiss in keeping up with my regular emails. So first off: Happy (belated) New Year. I hope the start of 2026 has been gentle with you, and that you and your loved ones are safe and finding ways to connect and be joyful in these turbulent times.
One of the reasons I haven't written in a while is that, truthfully, I have been struggling with how to show up online amidst the current political landscape. Gardening can seem inconsequential and superfluous in the midst of all that is happening. While this newsletter isn’t a political forum, I cannot in good conscience ignore my deep concern regarding our country's drift toward authoritarianism. Silence feels like complicity, and I needed to acknowledge my dissent and express my deep concern for current events.
As I’ve wrestled with these heavy thoughts, I keep coming back to what I can do: build community and share knowledge. My offering to the world is helping others to create places of beauty—spaces to engage with nature and find sanctuary with their loved ones. That mission feels more vital now than ever. Art, creativity, and community are my beacons of hope.
So, I am getting back to what I do best.
I just posted a new video touring my winter garden. We look at the "bones" of the landscape—evergreens, structural plants, and the quiet beauty that persists even in the off-season. I hope it offers you a moment of peace and inspiration. |
